As we get older, we often rely on family members and caregivers to help take care of us. Unfortunately, many seniors are hurt by the very people they count on for help. In fact, estimates suggest that more than 73,000 Michigan seniors are abused every year.
House Democrats are tackling this reprehensible act head-on by working to strengthen consumer protections for seniors and increase penalties for those who abuse, neglect or financially exploit them.
In August, the lawmakers passed the first wave of a 21-bill package through the House as part of their ongoing effort to strengthen Michigan's faltering consumer protection laws.
"Our seniors are our parents, grandparents and loved ones who have worked hard their whole lives to give back to their families," said State Representative Mark Meadows (East Lansing), lead sponsor of the plan. "Elder abuse is an unconscionable act that happens all too often, and we must ensure that our seniors are protected both financially and physically."
To report a suspected case of elder abuse, Michigan residents can call the state's 24-hour toll-free hotline at (800) 996-6228.
